The Mako Goku Uniform is constructed with a special material known as Life Fibers (Seimei Sen'i; lit. "Life Battle-Fibers"), which give wearers superhuman abilities. At Honnouji Academy, students wear Goku Uniforms (Gokuseifuku) that are ranked according to the school's stratified class structure. Mako, as a no-star student, wears a lower-ranked uniform compared to the Elite Four or Satsuki Kiryuin. The uniform allows Mako to participate in the violent conflicts that arise from Ryuko Matoi's search for her father's killer and her confrontation with Satsuki Kiryuin's student council.

In Their Own Story

Mako Mankanshoku, a hyperactive classmate of Ryuko Matoi, lets Ryuko move in with her impoverished family. As a no-star student at Honnouji Academy, Mako wears a Goku Uniform that grants her enhanced abilities. During the series, Mako becomes involved in the battles between Ryuko and Satsuki Kiryuin's forces. When the Elite Four and Nudist Beach rescue both Satsuki and Mako from Ragyo Kiryuin's forces, Mako's uniform plays a role in the climactic confrontation. Later, during the final battle, everyone offers their Goku Uniforms to power up Senketsu, allowing Ryuko to pursue her mother into space.
